False quake alert SMS creates panic in NE

Officials of Meteorological department have rubbished an SMS which was being circulated with an alert that an earthquake would hit North East tonight.

department have rubbished an SMS which was being circulated
with an alert that an earthquake would hit North East tonight.

People across the region today received SMS which
said, "Important msg - The Seismological Dept for Northeast,
Shillong have announced that a major earthquake measuring 5.7
on the Richter scale may hit Northeast at around 11:17 pm
tonight".

Rubbishing SMS, Seismological Observatory in-charge
here A C Lyngdoh told PTI they did not issue any such warning.
"There is no proved technique to forecast earthquakes
with reasonable degree of accuracy," he said.

PTI office in Shillong received several calls from
people, including those from Assam, asking for confirmation of
the SMS which created panic in the region.

North East lies in the highest seismic zone in the
world.
