HC allows Assam DGP to continue till next hearing

Assam DGP Sankar Baruah was on Tuesday directed by the Gauhati High Court to continue in office till the date of further hearing of the case against the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).

Guwahati: Assam DGP Sankar Baruah was
on Tuesday directed by the Gauhati High Court to continue in office
till the date of further hearing of the case against the
Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).

In an interim order staying an earlier CAT directive
to the state, a division bench of Justice I A Ansari and
Justice A C Upadhyaya heard the writ petition filed by the
government and issued notice returnable on April four, the
next date of hearing.

The bench asked the DGP to continue till that period.

DGP (vigilance and anti corruption) Sharda Prasad had
challenged the notification of appointment of Baruah on
seniority grounds before the CAT following which the tribunal
on March three last set aside the notification and directed
the state to constitute a panel within one month considering
all `eligible officers`.

The state government had subsequently filed a writ
petition challenging the legality and the CAT directive
following which the court today passed the interim.
