Mumbai: A delegation of ministers from Meghalaya Monday reviewed the security measures put in place by the Maharashtra government to protect students and other people from the northeastern state settled here, an official said.
The ministers held a meeting with Home Minister R.R. Patil this afternoon who gave them details on the security measures for the people from Meghalaya settled in different parts of the state.
According to official estimates, there are around 5,000 people from Meghalaya, mainly students and others working in private companies or hospitality industry living in Maharashtra, mainly in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik.
The ministers and officials also visited Pune, went around some campuses where Meghalaya students study and live and discussed their security measures with the Pune Police.
The delegation comprised of urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, information and technology minister A.T. Mondal, power minister Alexander Hek met Patil at the Mantralaya (ministry) Monday morning. The delegation also comprised of two officials, H.M. Shangpliang and C. Pasah.
Earlier, they visited Chennai and Bangalore before coming to Mumbai on a similar mission to enquire about the welfare of the people from Meghalaya, and expressed satisfaction with the arrangements in Maharashtra.
Last fortnight, over 20,000 people from the north-eastern states left Maharashtra following violence in Assam and attacks on some youths from the north-east in Pune.
Following the incidents, Maharashtra government initiated confidence building measures after which the exodus stopped and the situation returned to normal.
