Tripura lawyers threaten agitation

Tripura Lawyers Wednesday threatened to launch a statewide movement if the state government did not take action against `erring` police officials who allegedly detained a senior advocate on the charge of molesting a woman

Agartala: Tripura Lawyers Wednesdauy threatened
to launch a statewide movement from Friday if the state
government did not take action against `erring` police
officials who allegedly detained a senior advocate on the
charge of molesting a woman.

A six-member delegation of the lawyers, including the
representatives of the Tripura Bar Association and Agartala
bench of Guwahati High Court Bar Association, yesterday met
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and requested him to take action
against the police officials.

The spokesman of the lawyer’s delegation, Pijush Biswas,
told reporters here today that senior lawyer Pradyot Kumar
Dhar was arrested last Thursday and put in a lock-up at the
West Kotowali police station for one night on the basis of a
complaint by a woman that he molested her when she met him in
his chamber.

Tripura Bar Association president Rakhal Debnath said
that the detention was motivated because the case was
bailable. Section 50 of the CrPC was applied against the
lawyer which is a bailable warrant, but despite being 30 years
in legal profession Dhar was not given bail which is
unfortunate, he said.
