Asaram Bapu`s men tried to bribe us: Rajasthan police

Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu had threatened the Rajasthan government of dire consequences if he was arrested on sexual assault charges.

Jodhpur: In a bid to get their spiritual guru out of prison, the devotees of Asaram Bapu, who is in jail in a sexual assault case, have now tried to bribe and threaten cops investigating their preacher`s case.

His supporters had gone on a rampage after Asaram was arrested by the Rajasthan police.

Asaram Bapu is under investigation for charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in one of his ashrams on August 15.

Deputy Commissioner of Police AP Lamba, who is leading the probe, had received a threatening letter on Tuesday, the Jodhpur police told a court.

According to reports, the letter was faxed from Uttar Pradesh.

"Yes, our DCP was threatened," Assistant Commissioner of Police Chanchal Mishra told reporters.

Mishra also said that an attempt was made by the followers of Asaram to bribe the police team before they arrested the self-styled godman from his Indore ashram.

In one of his press conferences, DCP Lamba had said that the police had sufficient evidence against the guru.

On August 31, Asaram had threatened the Rajasthan government during a religious congregation in Indore.

He had said his supporters would go on a rampage if he was arrested by the Rajasthan Police in the sexual assault case.

Asaram, 72, is currently lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail after a court remanded him to 14-day judicial custody in connection with the alleged sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl at his ashram near Jodhpur.
