11 killed in Afghan attack

Taliban fired four rounds of mortar on civilians in Kunar province.

Kabul: At least 11 civilians were killed in an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan Monday, Xinhua reported.

The interior ministry said "enemies of peace and stability" - a term generally used to refer to the Taliban - fired four rounds of mortar on civilians in Wata Pour district in Kunar province Monday morning.

The ministry called it a cowardly act.

Targeting civilians was a clear sign of the weakness of insurgents, and such attacks can never weaken the spirit of cooperation between Afghan people and security forces, a statement said.

The mountainous region of Kunar along the border with Pakistan`s tribal region is regarded as a hotbed of the Taliban.
