Islamabad: Keeping hopes alive for the Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, his new lawyer, Owais Sheikh, will file a fresh mercy petition in the Lahore bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Sarabjit’s lawyer, while talking to a news channel, said that he had also despatched a mercy plea of his client to President Asif Ali Zardari. Sarabjit’s earlier mercy petition was dismissed by ex-Pak President General Musharraf.

The mercy plea will be filed in the wake of rejection of a similar appeal by the apex court earlier mainly due to the non-appearance of Sarabjit’s lawyer Rana Abdul Hamid during the court’s proceedings defying a SC notice in this regard.

The lawyer also stated that a registration application would be filed in the apex court today. He regretted that last time due to the non-appearance of the defence lawyer; the review plea had been dismissed.

When questioned, Sarabjit’s counsel responded saying that this time the registration application might be accepted right away and subsequently the review plea would also be heard.

Sarabjit who has been languishing in Pak jails for years has been fighting through his lawyers for his case. His family in India too has been vigorously campaigning for his release.
