Maldives: Mohamed Nasheed accepts inquiry report
Male: Former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed has accepted an inquiry report which dismissed his claims that he was ousted in a coup, but demanded early polls.
"I accept the report with Ahmed Saeed`s reservations," he told reporters, referring to his nominee to the investigating panel who resigned a day before the release of the report saying the probe had ignored some vital evidence.
Talking to reporters here, Nasheed said that from now on the government is constitutional and they are not traitors.
He said while political parties have accepted the report, the wrongdoings of police and military must be investigated and action should be taken against the perpetrators.
The former president said he will now press for the full implementation of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) report to strengthen democratic institutions.
The 62-page inquiry report, initiated by the secretary-general of the Commonwealth group of nations, found that the transfer of power from Nasheed to his deputy Mohamed Waheed was constitutional and that there was no coup.
The Commonwealth and the UN have welcomed the inquiry report.
Talking to the media for the first time since the release of the report, Nasheed alleged that the report had been compiled with the situation in mind rather than the truth.
He said that he respected the concerns raised by his representative Saeed. Nasheed stressed that his decision to accept the report is with the concerns of Saeed.
Saeed yesterday had alleged that the report had omitted vital evidence and hence cannot be considered as entirely genuine. He further expressed his personal belief that Nasheed had in fact resigned under duress.
In addition, as the report had indicated early elections, his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) would not cease its press for early presidential polls, Nasheed pledged.
In response to questions from reporters, Nasheed stressed that stability in the Maldives can only be achieved by acting on the inquiry report.
