Islamabad: The brother of a Pakistani doctor, given a 33-year jail term for helping the CIA track Osama bin Laden, on Monday appealed to the Supreme Court Chief Justice to intervene and give him the right to challenge the "one-sided verdict".
Jameel Afridi further called on Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry to provide protection to Shakeel Afridi`s family.
He made the remarks while addressing a news conference with Afridi`s lawyers in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
"I appeal to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to provide us protection and give us the right to appeal. We are not getting a copy of the verdict and suo moto action should be taken against this wrong ruling. This is a one-sided decision made under a black law," Jameel Afridi said.
Shakeel Afridi was convicted under the British-era Frontier Crimes Regulation by a court in Khyber tribal region last week for running a fake vaccination campaign to help determine that bin Laden was living in the compound in Abbottabad town.
The al Qaeda chief was killed in the compound in a unilateral American military raid on May 2 last year.
Jameel Afridi said his younger brother was unilaterally given a prison sentence by the Assistant Political Agent of Khyber Agency and some members of a tribal jirga or council.
"What sort of justice is this?" he asked.
Samiullah Afridi, a member of a civil society group campaigning against militancy, said Shakeel Afridi had done nothing illegal. The actual reason behind the verdict could only be known once authorities provide a copy of it, he said.
