Sri Lanka war commission to release report

The Lessons learnt and Reconciliation Commission was set up by Mahinda Rajapaksa in May 2010.

Colombo: President Mahinda Rajapaksa will receive Sri Lanka`s crucial internal probe report into the three-decade ethnic conflict on November 20, officials said on Friday.

The Lessons learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) was set up by Rajapaksa in May 2010 to examine the conflict with the LTTE during the period between February 2002 and May 2009.

The LLRC is to officially conclude its sessions on November 15.

The report is to be handed over to the President on November 20, LLRC officials said.

"The commission held 57 public sessions and undertook 12 field visits at over 40 locations to talk to the people in the north and east and in other affected areas of the country," a LLRC statement said.

The commission examined the progress of the conflict that afflicted Sri Lanka as well as looked ahead towards an era of healing and peace building in the country.

However, its limited mandate restricting it to the period of the Norwegian backed peace initiative and the end to the military offensive came under criticism from international rights watch groups.

The commission came under pressure on the rights accountability front after UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon`s panel recommended that an independent probe be held to examine alleged war crimes during the last phase of the military conflict.

Sri Lanka has used the LLRC to thwart criticism on the government`s rights record and cited the panel as its mechanism to investigate all such allegations.
