Dhaka: A Thai diplomat, travelling with the visiting Thailand Princess Maha Chakri Sirin's convoy, was on Thursday killed in a road accident, officials said.

55-year-old Pannee Likanajule, a councillor at the Thai embassy here, was critically injured when a pickup van collided head on with the car she was travelling in central Tangail district, they said.

"The patient suffered internal haemorrhages from the accident," a spokesman of the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka cantonment said.

She was initially treated at a local facility but later was rushed to Dhaka for better treatment.

Police said the accident took place this afternoon on the Dhaka-Tangail highway when Princess was returning to Dhaka from northeastern Gaibandha.

The princess, who was travelling in another car, escaped the accident unhurt along with others in the convoy. She is visiting Bangladesh as part of a US research team from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
