AIADMK criticise TN govt for not implementing HC directions

Jayalalithaa criticised ruling DMK for not implementing last week`s Madras High Court directions asking it to take action against four top police officers indicted for responsible for the February 19 lawyers-police clash.

Chennai: AIADMK General Secretary Jayalalithaa
on Thursday criticised ruling DMK for not implementing last week`s
Madras High Court directions asking it to take action against
four top police officers indicted for responsible for the
February 19 lawyers-police clash.

"The bench named four police officers for suspension and
also directed the state government to initiate disciplinary
action against them. Almost a week has passed since the
judgement was delivered. Yet the court`s instructions do not
appear to have been carried out," she said.

In a statement here she demanded to know what the
government proposed to do. "Chief Minister M Karunanidhi
should spell out what action he plans to take," she said.

Karunanidhi also holds the Home portfolio.

She criticised Karunanidhi for `defending the men in
uniform`, referring to his recent comments where he said the
force "should not be criticised for few isolated incidents
even as they faced innumerable challenges while discharging
duty."

She said, that it was during her "regime" as Chief
Minister that the force was an efficient one, maintaining law
and order and ensuring all-round peace. Forest brigand
Veerappan was also killed during the AIADMK rule, she said.

A division bench of the High Court on October 29 had held
four top police officers including the then city Commissioner
K Radhakrishnan "squarely responsible" for the clash and
directed state government to suspend them pending disciplinary
action.

The court also held the police officials guilty of
contempt of court for committing excesses in the High court
premises during the clash and causing damage to court
property, among other things.
