DMDK, CPI(M) launch `Third Front` for civic polls

DMDK and CPI (M) were part of the AIADMK-led rainbow coalition and were expected to fight the civic polls as allies.

Chennai: DMDK and CPI(M), snubbed by ruling
AIADMK during the seat-sharing talks for next month`s civic
polls, on Tuesday launched a `Third Front,` which almost came to
fruition during the April 13 Assembly elections.

The CPI(M) will contest the Coimbatore and Vellore
corporations besides 25 Municipalities as an ally of Desiya
Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founded by actor Vijayakant.

"A Third Front has formed which is good news," Vijayakant
said.

DMDK and CPI (M) were part of the AIADMK-led rainbow
coalition that defeated the DMK in Assembly polls and were
expected to fight the civic polls as allies.

However, AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa
announced her party`s candidates for all the corporations and
municipalities even as the talks were on, prompting DMDK and
CPI(M) to go it alone.

Recent discussions by the two parties saw DMDK and the
CPI(M) join hands to face the civic polls. A similar situation
had come up during the Assembly polls too. Differences between
the AIADMK and DMDK and the Left parties prompted the latter
to take steps for the formation of a Third Front.

However, last minute hectic parleys saw the differences
being ironed out and the parties faced elections as allies.
DMK not only lost power, but was relegated to a third spot,
allowing DMDK to become the principal opposition party.
