Chennai: Over 9,000 policemen would be pressed
into service during the immersion of the idols of Lord Ganesha
in the sea on September 18 and 19, a top police official said
today.
Chennai City Police Commissioner T Rajendran told reporters
here that permission has been given to immerse the idols in
the sea at four places in the city.
He said adequate security arrangements were being made to
ensure that the immersion procession passes off peacefully.
Mounted police would also patrol the beach front, he said.
Police sources said cranes would be pressed into service to
lift giant Ganesha idols for immersion in the sea.
As thousands of people are expected to congregate at Marina
beach for the idol immersion, watch towers and public address
systems would also be set up to monitor movement of
anti-socials, he said.
