Nagercoil: A civil engineering contractor caused
a flutter at the Collector`s office complex here when he sat
with a begging bowl and a placard urging people to give money
for bribing Panchayat Union Assistant Executive Engineer.

Police detained him at the collectorate yesterday and
sought details of those demanding bribes from him.

Police said the contractor had completed a road work for Rs
45000 in Mulagumoodu village and had submitted the bill, which
however was not sanctioned for more than a month. officials
reportedly had sought two types of bill for the same work and
also a bribe to settle the bill.

Irked by the demand, the contractor resorted to this novel
form of protest, saying he had no other option."I completed my
work and laid a quality road. I will get only a small margin.
How can I give money to officials also?" he told police.

The contractor had recently asked the Kanyakumari District
Superintendent of Police to trace the Special Branch inspector
who was absconding after his alleged link in the sexual abuse
of a teenage girl from Kerala was reported by the media.
