Chennai: Tamil Nadu leads other states in
providing quality health care to the poor through innovative
schemes like Kalaignar insurance scheme launched last year by
the DMK government, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said today.
"There are no two opinions on the state being a leader in
providing quality health care to the people. The Kalaignar
insurance scheme launched in 2009 is the jewel in the crown of
the DMK`s four year rule," he said.
Karunanidhi said 1.44 crore people living below the
poverty line have so far enrolled in the Kalaignar insurance
scheme and around 69,278 persons had benefitted so far.
He was speaking at a function to felicitate Apollo
Hospitals Founder-Chairman Dr Pratap C Reddy on being
conferred the Padma Vibushan award.
The Chief Minister lauded Dr Reddy for conceptualising
telemedicine, which helps people receive treatment in their
homes and said it had proved a success in Tamil Nadu, with 100
telemedicine centres of the total of 500 nationwide being set
up in the state.
"It is a matter of pride for the state and Dr Reddy should
be given credit for conceptualising this scheme," he said.
