11 held in gang-rape remanded to judicial custody

Ten persons arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 20-year old woman here were on Friday remanded to 15 days of judicial custody by a court.

Judicial Magistrate II Jayanthi also ordered that a 15-year old boy, another accused, be lodged in the Observation Home for Juvenile delinquents in Puducherry.

According to the police complaint lodged by the victim, who hails from Nannilam in Tamil Nadu, a total of 15 persons abducted her and sexually assaulted her on December 24.

Police arrested 11 persons and registered cases under five sections, including section 376 - 2 (g) (punishment for rape).

The case has been transferred to the Puducherry CBCID. Police are on the look out for the remaining four persons who are absconding.

Senior Superintendent of Police suspended a sub-inspector and a head constable at Karaikal for lapses in dealing with the case.

Meanwhile, the victim has been admitted to the government hospital here and was undergoing treatment.

Police sources said a detailed probe was on and a police team was collecting evidence.
