New Delhi: BJP on Thursday demanded a CBI probe into the death in Lucknow jail of main accused in the killing of a senior Uttar Pradesh medical official suspecting that "he might have been murdered" last night to stop him from naming many high-ups.

"It is a case of murder and not of suicide. We demand that a proper CBI inquiry be done in the suspicious death of Dr Yogendra Singh Sachan. It is a very serious matter and we need to honestly investigate the matter", said BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Sachan, main accused in the murder of Chief Medical Officer B P Singh who was shot dead on April 2, was found dead in the toilet of Lucknow jail hospital last night.

He said "CBI should carry out an honest and transparent probe in the suspicious death of Sachan in a time-bound manner so that all the facts are known".

"The surrounding suspicious circumstances clearly indicate that had Dr Sachan spoken, the names of higher ups would have been exposed", said Prasad, hinting "he might have been eliminated".

Prasad alleged two UP ministers Anand Mishra and Babu Singh Kushwaha were earlier made to resign in the wake of their alleged involvement in the purchase of medicines by corrupt means.

BJP also took the occasion to turn the heat on Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, saying "lawlessness and anarchy" prevailed there.

"The UP government under Mayawati has become a byword for murder, rape, kidnapping for ransom, and where the police and political leaders ruling the state, including ministers and MLAs, openly patronised the criminals".

"It is unfortunate that the worst kind of crime against women is happening in the nation's biggest state, which is ruled by a woman," Prasad said alleging "the police and ruling leaders are openly patronising criminals and life of common people is gripped by fear and an utter sense of helplessness reigns there".

He charged "dozens of BSP MLAs are in jail for ape, murder and kidnapping and many of them have also been convicted as well".

Having a dig at chief minister Mayawati, the BJP leader said "even though she claimed to be the messiah of the poor and lower castes, most victims of such crimes were from the poor, under-privileged and lower castes".

He said the Mayawati government had "lost moral responsibility" to rule the state and the people of UP were "yearning" for a change. "The BJP people will start awakening the people for bringing about this change".
