New Delhi: Holy city and the cultural capital of the country – Varanasi – is expected to witness a multi-cornered contest with all major political parties fielding strong contestants against BJP`s PM candidate Narendra Modi, who is contesting for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls for the first time outside Gujarat.
According to reports, the Congress`s Central Election Committee is expected to meet today to finalise its fourth list for the Lok Sabha elections. There are speculations that the party might field Digvijaya Singh against BJP`s Narendra Modi from Varanasi.
Digvijaya Singh has also expressed his willingness to his party to contest against Modi.
Meanwhile, the BSP led by Mayawati is also planning to field a strong contestant from the Varanasi seat. Its Brahmin face Satish Chandra Mishra is likely to fight Modi in the constituency in a bid to break away the BJP`s upper caste vote.
The BSP is also likely to field another senior leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui against SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in Azamgarh to eat into the SP`s Muslim vote.
BSP chief Mayawati herself may contest from Lalgunj in eastern UP, the region with 32 seats, becoming a key battleground in the Lok Sabha elections.
