Several agitated farmers, demanding higher compensation for their land acquired by CPWD in 1961, today tried to plough it, following which they were stopped by police, a senior official said.

Ghaziabad: Several agitated farmers, demanding higher compensation for their land acquired by CPWD in 1961, today tried to plough it, following which they were stopped by police, a senior official said.

Farmers of Sadar Pur, Rahees Pur and Raza Pur villages tried to plough their land which was acquired by Central Public Works Department (CPWD) in 1961, City SP Ajaypal Sharma said.

They were stopped by police and matter was resolved amicably, he said, adding that no untoward incident happened during the protest and police force is deployed at the site.

The farmers are staging a sit in protest since last one month for a higher compensation for their land.

Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rajbir Singh, while addressing the farmers, said the CPWD had acquired their land at the cost of 41 and 61 paisa per yard in 1961 for schools and government offices.

He further said that in the next phase BKU will stage protests in front the buildings, constructed by CPWD at their lands.

If their demand of higher compensation at present market rate is not fulfilled, the protest will remain continue, he said.

Meanwhile, farmers of 19 villages today started their two-day sit-in protest at collectorate under the banner of Kisan Kalyan Samiti for a compensation of Rs 10,000 per square yard.

The sit-in protest is led by Dr Bablee Gurjar.

Addressing farmers, Gurjar said that their land has been acquired for Delhi-Meerut Express Way and the District Magistrate is not paying heed towards their demands.

The farmers will keep on protesting until their demands are met, he said.
