HC issues notices to UP Assembly Speaker

The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker and BSP UP chief Swami Prasad Maurya on a writ petition challenging disqualification proceedings against MLA Fareed Mahfooz Qidawai.

The Lucknow bench, comprising justices Uma Nath Singh
and Anil Kumar, listed the matter for further hearing
tomorrow.

On May 9, 2011, BSP MLA Fareed Mahfooz Qidawai, who was
elected from Masaului assembly seat in Barabanki district,
joined the SP in presence of its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Two days later, the BSP moved a petition before the
Speaker under the anti-defection law against the MLA.
Petitioner Qidwai had submitted before the court that he
had sent-in his resignation by post from Barabanki, his
counsel Umesh Chandra said.
