Mayawati hits at Centre for not supporting anti-Naxal efforts

Accusing the Centre of failing to take positive steps to find an effective solution to Naxal problems, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday alleged it was not supporting the state`s efforts against the menace.

Lucknow: Accusing the Centre of failing
to take positive steps to find an effective solution to Naxal
problems, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday alleged
it was not supporting the state`s efforts against the menace.

"The state government has initiated steps to find an
effective solution to Naxalism, as a socio-economic problem.
Unfortunately, the Centre`s support to the efforts being made
by the state had been very disappointing," Mayawati said in a
statement issued here.

"The Centre neither paid any attention towards finding
an effective solution to Naxalism problem nor did it take any
positive step in this direction," she alleged.

The BSP president said that in some districts of UP,
including Mirzapur and Sonbhadra, which share their boundaries
with Naxalism affected states, the problem has surfaced.

"Naxalism surfaced in some districts of the state due
to lack of basic amenities and driven by poverty, unemployment
and absence of health and education services, local people
became its supporters out of sheer frustration," she said.

The CM said her government has taken concrete
measures to ensure all round development of Naxal-infested
areas from the state fund, despite having limited resources.

"A host of development works including a vast network
of roads, electricity, employment, health and education, were
carried out in the Naxal-infested districts of the state," she
said.

"It is due to the efforts of the state government that
no major incident of Naxalism had occurred in the state, which
is a major achievement of the BSP government," she said.

Mayawati said there were apprehensions of Naxal problem
resurfacing in some backward areas of UP like Bundelkhand and
eastern UP.

"The state government had repeatedly asked the Centre
to extend financial help for the development of these areas,
but nothing concrete had been done so far," she alleged.
