Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday launched a blistering attack on main opposition party BJP for choosing Narendra Modi as the party`s top choice for the prime minister`s post in the next General Elections.

Addressing the “Desh Bachao, Desh Banao” rally in the holy city of Varanasi, the SP chief said, “Narendra Modi hasn`t done anything for the people in Gujarat. This is the only person BJP could find to be the PM nominee?”

The SP national president continued by saying, “He (Narendra Modi) threatened me and said he won`t be responsible for my safety if I enter Ahmedabad.”

“This is the kind of Gujarat he (Modi) wants to make?” he asked.

Attacking the BJP leader, Mulayam said, “Modi is responsible for the communal riots in Gujarat. He has the blood of innocents on his hands.”

Urging youngsters to be prepared for the fast approaching Lok Sabha polls, Mulayam said, “This isn`t going to be ordinary elections, the SP will play a crucial role.” adding, “These elections are going to be the most important elections of our lifetime.”

The SP chief also came down heavily on the Congress-led ruling coalition at the Centre by saying, “The central government has failed on all fronts. Even after so many years of Independence we are still fighting poverty.”
No one can form government at the Centre without SP`s support, he warned.

The SP patriarch also rejected criticism of his party`s government in Uttar Pradesh and said, “If there is a model government anywhere in India which thinks of farmers and poor then its the SP government in UP.”

SP`s “Desh Bachao, Desh Banao” rally was held on a day when BJP`s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is also due to hold his sixth “Vijay Shankhnad Rally” in Gorakhpur.

The Varanasi rally, which was a massive show of strength by the SP, was attended by a large numbers of supporters from nearby areas.

The Samajwadi Party bigwigs like Akhilesh Yadav and Azam Khan also addressed the rally.

Besides, the ruling party has also decided to hold another rally at Gonda on February 3. Party workers from nearby areas of Gonda, Balrampur and Bahraich have been asked to start preparations to make this rally a success.

This was the sixth rally of Samajwadi Party in last one month and a half. Earlier Samajwadi Party had held rallies in Azamgarh, Bareilly, Mainpuri, Budaun and Jhansi.
