Lucknow/Muzaffarnagar: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday announce the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to take over the probe into the Muzaffarnagar riots that left 49 people dead and rendered thousands homeless.

The SIT will be headed by Superintendent of Police KN Mishra.

Meanwhile, state DGP Deo Raj Nagar visited the troubled western UP town today. The top cop admitted that there lapses on part of the Uttar Pradesh police.

Nagar said it was unfortunate there was lack of policing in some riot hit areas. Importantly, the state police chief also said that the force should exude toughness and should come out as impartial in their actions while dealing with such incidents.

Toll climbs to 49; more police outposts set up

Gearing up security arrangements in the wake of riots here, district authorities have set up 14 police outposts in the worst affected areas, even as they said the toll in the violence has climbed to 49.

Additional District Magistrate Inder Mani Tripathi said 49 persons lost their lives, 12 persons were reported missing and more than eight religious places were damaged in the communal violence in the district.

The district authorities have decided to set up at least 33 more police outposts in areas of the district affected by the communal violence.

"The administration has already opened 14 police outposts in worst riot-affected villages out of 47 to seek confidence of victims," state DGP Deo Raj Nagar told reporters here.

A sub-inspector, a head constable, six constables and a platoon of paramilitary force have been posted in each police outpost, he said.

Police outposts have been established in Sisoli (BKU headquarters), Bhora Kala, Bhorakhurd, Hadoli, Mudhbhar, Gharinoabad, Mohd Raisingh, Shikherpur, Bhaju, Choonsa, Mohdpur, Purbaliyan, Jiwana and Lachera in the district, he said.
