Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court on Monday
dismissed a petition seeking initiation of criminal contempt
proceedings against Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh
Yadav for his post-Ayodhya verdict statement.
The Lucknow Bench of the Court, comprising Justice
Abdul Mateen and Justice Ashwini Kumar Singh, dismissed the
petition on the ground of maintainability.
The petition, filed by lawyer Bal Gangadhar Tripathi
on January seven, had submitted that Yadav`s statement given
after the Ayodhya title suit verdict was contemptuous.
The petition came up for hearing on January 13 and was
listed for hearing today by the Court on the request of the
government counsel.
A day after the High Court verdict, the SP supremo on
October one had said he was disappointed as faith was given
priority over legal procedures.
"I am disappointed as the decision was delivered by
keeping faith above law and evidences," Mulayam had said while
reading out a written statement.
He had said Muslims were "feeling cheated and the
entire community was in a state of despair".
"This is not a good sign for the country, the
Constitution and even for the judiciary," the SP supremo had
said.
