Samajwadi govt suffering from "BSP mania": BSP

Coming to the rescue of Mayawati, BSP said though she held the family welfare department for two years she had no role in granting funds under the NRHM.

Lucknow: Opposition BSP on Wednesday hit back at Akhilesh Yadav government over allegations its supremo and former chief minister Mayawati was involved in the multi-crore NRHM scam in Uttar Pradesh, saying it was suffering from "BSP mania".

Coming to the rescue of Mayawati, BSP said though she held the family welfare department for two years she had no role in granting funds under the NRHM.

It also said the probes launched by the state government on various projects during the tenure of the Mayawati government were "politically motivated".

Claiming that the Samajwadi government is suffering from "BSP mania", a BSP release said that at the state level the NRHM scheme is overseen and implemented by two committees-- executive committee and governing body--which are led by the principal secretary of the department concerned and chief secretary, respectively.

"Though she held the family welfare department between 2007 and 2009, she never gave any financial acceptance as neither it was sought from her as none of the documents were placed before her nor there was any requirement for the same as per the rules", the release said.

Terming the statements of SP leaders regarding enquiries in the scam as politically motivated, the release said, it was also aimed at diverting attention from their government`s alleged failure to fulfil poll promises and deteriorating law and order situation.

Citing the various steps taken by the former chief minister in the NRHM scam including sacking of two ministers in her government and recommending CBI and CAG enquiries, the release said, it would have been better had these leaders including the chief minister and his ministers kept silent when the probe was on and waited for its final outcome.

The funds for the scheme are directly routed through the state health society by the union government and the state government has no direct or indirect role in it and these committees do not require to take assent of the state, the release said.

Even the audit is held by the auditor appointed by the central government and directions, if any, to rectify the shortcomings are also given by the central government, it added.
