Units at UP airports to check illegal money flow

In a bid to check flow of illegal money to influence electorates during UP elections, intelligence units have been set up at all airports.

Lucknow: In a bid to check flow of illegal
money to influence electorates during Uttar Pradesh Assembly
elections, intelligence units have been set up at all airports
in the state.

"To check movement of money or bullion, which could be
used to influence electorates or otherwise (in UP polls),
airport intelligence units have been set up at all airports in
the state," Chief Electorate Officer Umesh Sinha told
reporters here.

AIU teams at bigger airports, to be headed by an official
of Income Tax officer rank, would monitor movement of bullion,
he said, adding that a round-the-clock toll free number has
also been set up for enforcement purpose where any person can
give information regarding illegal movement of cash, gifts or
liquor.

The CEO said as compared to 2007 state assembly and 2009
Lok Sabha polls, more central forces would be deployed this
time.

"For every phase, advance teams of central paramilitary
forces will be deployed for area domination," he said.

These teams would patrol sensitive areas and polling
booths.

Since yesterday, 24 complaints relating to violation of
model code of conduct have been received and inquiry has been
initiated, Sinha said.
