UP govt gives relief to farmers injured in police action

Uttar Pradesh government gave compensation of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh each to the farmers who were injured in police firing and lathi-charge respectively last month.

Greater Noida: Uttar Pradesh government
on Thursday gave compensation of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh each to
the farmers who were injured in police firing and lathi-charge
respectively in Greater Noida last month.

State Cabinet Minister Laxmi Narain said after a meeting
with farmers this afternoon that Rs 5 lakh relief would be
given to the four injured in PAC firing and Rs 2.5 lakh to the
12 persons injured in lathi-charge.

The cheques were provided to the farmers later.

District Magistrate Deepak Aggarwal said the minister
also gave details to the farmers of the government`s new
rehabilitation policy.

The farmers were injured in police action on February 21
while staging a protest, demanding higher compensation for
their land that is yet to be acquired by the Yamuna Expressway
Authority.

The farmers, more than 50 in number, were on a dharna
since January 17.

While the protesters alleged that the police attacked
them, the police claimed that they opened fire in self-defence
after the farmers pelted stones and even tried to set a police
vehicle ablaze.
