Dehradun: Yatra to Badrinath was resumed today after a gap of five days with breached stretches along the highway to the Himalayan temple repaired while 80 pilgrims stranded in Ghanghariya on their way back from the Sikh shrine of Hemkund Sahib were rescued by choppers.

With breached points repaired and blockages removed from Badrinath highway, the road was opened to small and light vehicles today, Chamoli District Magistrate Ashok Kumar said.

A total of 450 pilgrims reached Badrinath and paid obeisance there after yatra to the famous temple was resumed after a gap of five days, he said.

The very first spell of monsoon rains had breached the highway at Hathi Pahad, Lambagad and Benakuli on June 24-25 bringing the pilgrimage to a halt.

However, yatra to Kedarnath remains suspended till tomorrow with a motor bridge between Sonparayag and Gaurikund still under repair.

Pilgrims on way to Hemkund Sahib are also not currently being allowed to proceed beyond Govindghat with a wooden bridge over Pushpavati river at Bhyundar village along the 14km trek route to the Sikh shrine still being repaired, Gurudwara's manager Seva Singh said.

Meanwhile, 80 Hemkund Sahib pilgrims stranded in Ghanghariya on their return journey were ferried to their destination in choppers, the DM said.
