Kolkata: West Bengal Higher Education Minister Bratya Basu on Monday alleged that certain political parties and some vested groups were coming in the way of setting up of a campus of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) at Murshidabad in the state.
In a reply during question hour in Assembly, he said that presently classes were being held in rented rooms.
Basu said, "political parties like Bharatiya Janata Dal (read Bharatiya Janata Party) were opposing the move to set up the campus in the state along with some vested groups".
Although land had been allotted for the campus, there was some forcible occupation on it.
Later, Leader of the Opposition Surya Kant Mishra told reporters that it was surprising to note that BJP which does not have a single MLA in the state, was not allowing the campus to be set up.
He said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, an ally of BJP once upon a time, was scared of the party.
