Water receding from areas in Jalpaiguri district

Water level on Thursday started receding from areas in Jalpaiguri district which was inundated due to sudden rise in water level in all major rivers and release of excess water of Teesta river after rains in upper reaches.

Jalpaiguri: Water level on Thursday started receding from areas in Jalpaiguri district which was inundated due to sudden rise in water level in all major rivers and release of excess water of Teesta river after rains in upper reaches.

People of the affected areas of Dobaganj, Takhimari under Rajganj block and Chapadanga under Mal sub-division have been given shelter in school buildings and provided with food.

The situation improved following cessation of rains and stoppage of release of excess water since last evening, a district official said.

At least 400 people were affected in the north Bengal district yesterday following release of excess water Teesta river.

Referring to the flood-like situation in the district, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said yesterday that more than 2,000 people were rescued to safe place.
