Sanaa: Five people, including two
soldiers, were killed today in clashes between security forces
and demonstrators in Ataq in southern Yemen, a local official
told.
"Five people, among them two soldiers, were killed and
10 people were wounded in clashes at the entrance of the town
of Ataq," the capital of Shabwa province, 500 kilometers
southeast of Sanaa, the official said.
The clashes began when security forces and soldiers
tried to stop thousands of protesters calling for southern
secession from entering the city, the official said.
A demonstration was underway inside the city to
commemorate the British withdrawal from Aden, which marked the
independence of the former South Yemen, on November 30, 1967.
