6.0-magnitude earthquake hits off Indonesia: USGS

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the Indonesian island of Java late Wednesday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.

The earthquake hit at 9:45 pm local time (1445 GMT), the US Geological Survey said, some 110 kilometres (68 miles) south of the city of Banjar in West Java, at a depth of 35 kilometres.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity in the region.

A 6.9-magnitude quake that struck in the Banda Sea in December sparked panic but there were no reports of damage or casualties.
