Beijing airport bomber receives 6-year sentence

Former taxi driver Ji Zhongxing went on trial last month for endangering public safety. Ji was the only person injured in the July 20 explosion.

Beijing: A Beijing court has given a six-year prison sentence to a partly paralysed man who exploded a bomb inside Beijing`s airport in his quest for redress in what he said was a beating by public officials.

Former taxi driver Ji Zhongxing went on trial last month for endangering public safety. Ji was the only person injured in the July 20 explosion.

The Beijing Chaoyang District Court said on its microblog that Ji`s lawyers and relatives were on hand for the verdict and sentence today.

Ji`s lawyer Li Xiaoyuan said his client had hoped to attract police so he could be detained and discuss his beating in 2005 by city security guards in the Guangdong city of Dongguan.

The case drew sympathy from some who say the government ignores the marginalized.
