British PM likely to join live TV debate before poll

London: For the first time, Britain is likely to have an American-style live television debate before the next general elections and Prime Minister Gordon Brown is also seriously considering taking part in the discussion.
Conservative party leader David Cameron has often challenged Brown to join him in a live television debate on Sky News, and so far Brown has appeared reluctant to accept the challenge.

But Transport Secretary Lord Adonis told the channel that Brown is "seriously considering" taking part in the debate that will feature, Brown, Cameron and Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Transport Secretary Lord Adonis told Sky News, "Gordon Brown has never ducked debate. He is very open in the way he approaches debates. I know that Sky has got a campaign going for a debate between the party leaders. He is very seriously considering it".

The next general elections are due in mid-2010.

Lord Adonis added, "We want to see that at the next general election there`s a proper debate between the parties on the policies that they have for the country in the future and I know Gordon Brown will not be ducking that debate at large. The precise format of a debate between the party leaders would need to be determined before, so he can make a decision on that."

Conservative leader David Cameron and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg have both signed up for the Sky News debate.

Lord Adonis` comments give the strongest indication yet that the Prime Minister will join the debate considered unprecedented in British parliamentary politics.
