Washington: A relative of the masked gunman, Adam Lanza, who took lives of over 28 people including his mother after opening fire in a Connecticut elementary school, has said that the 20-yr-old was ‘obviously not well.’

Adam of Newtown, Connecticut, was a child of the suburbs and a child of divorce who at his age still lived with his mother.

On Friday Dec 14, he appears to have started his day by shooting his mother Nancy Lanza in the face, and then driving to nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School armed with at least two handguns and at least one semi-automatic rifle, killing over 20 young children and six adults at the school, ABC News reports.

Adam, wearing black fatigues and a military-style vest, was then later on found dead in a classroom following the incident, but it was not clear whether he took his own life or was shot by police.

According to the report, family friends in Newtown also described the young man as troubled and described Nancy as very rigid.

"[Adam] was not connected with the other kids," said one friend.

Nancy and her husband Peter, Adam`s father, divorced in 2009. When they first filed for divorce in 2008, a judge had ordered that they participate in a "parenting education program,” the report said.

Adam is not known to have a criminal history as investigators try to solve the case.
