Dalai Lama `optimistic` about present Tibet situation

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Sunday said he was optimistic about the present situation in Tibet and felt things were changing.

Kolkata: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Sunday said he was optimistic about the present situation in Tibet and felt things were changing.

"Oh yes. Basically I think things are really changing... I am optimistic about the present situation in Tibet," the Dalai Lama told media persons at a function here.

Calling for transparency with regard to Tibet, the exiled leader said: "I have a strong sort of feeling that transparency is very essential. Chinese people also have the right to know the reality".

He said Chinese intellectuals were gradually becoming more supportive to the cause of Tibet.

"More and more Chinese intellectuals are showing interest in Tibet and Tibetan culture," he added during an interactive session organised by a business chamber.

Kochi: The training for the first batch of
Sagar Prahari Bal (SPB), formed on directives of the Cabinet
Committee on Security, will commence from January 11 at the
Naval Gunnery School, INS Dronacharya, Kochi.

The SPB would have a strength of 1000 men, including 120
officers and eventually possess adequate number of Fast
Interception Craft for coastal operations, a navy press
release said here today.

The charter of duties of the newly formed force would
include force protection, seaward security of coastal and
offshore naval assets, assistance to civil agencies and
ensuring compliance of martime regulations, it said.

The Sagar Prahari Bal, drawn from within the Indian Navy,
for a fixed tenure, will maintain a youthful profile and
undergo specialised training in Asymmetric Warfare and Low
Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO).

The first batch would comprise 15 officers and 100 men,
the release said.
