Cairo: The death toll due to a severe heatwave, sweeping Egypt since early this week, has risen to 76 after 15 more deaths were reported, mostly of elderly.

At least 187 others were transferred to hospitals in several governorates after suffering from heat exhaustion, including 51 who are still under observation, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Cairo witnessed six deaths out of 15, according to the statement, which added that most of those killed were among the elderly.

Last Sunday, the Ministry said that 61 people have died across Egypt due to the severe heatwave that has hit the country.

The deaths of the heatwave included detainees and patients in a psychiatric hospital, according to media reports.

The Ministry asked Egyptians to keep away from direct sunlight and drink more water.

The heatwave is expected to continue until August 25, according to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA).
