Lagos: Authorities say unknown gunmen shot and killed two police officers in Nigeria after a radical Islamist sect engineered a prison break in a neighbouring state.
Niger state police spokesman Richard Ogunche said the shooting happened on Thursday in Minna, the capital of Niger state, which borders Nigeria`s capital Abuja. Ogunche said the gunmen had refused to stop at a police checkpoint and opened fire, also wounding another officer on duty there.
Ogunche said on Friday an investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The shooting happened a day after the radical sect known as Boko Haram orchestrated a prison break in neighbouring Kogi state, freeing 119 inmates.
