Israel shuts down dovish radio station

Critics say the move is part of a broader trend in Israel to curb freedom of expression.

Jerusalem: Israel`s communications ministry
says that it has ordered the shutdown of an
Israeli-Palestinian radio station, saying it is broadcasting
into Israel illegally.

The ministry said in a statement today that it had shut
down the dovish Kol Hashalom station, which has been operating
since 2004.

The station`s Israeli director Mossi Raz notes that the
transmitter is located in the West Bank, not Israel, and thus
should not be under Israeli authority. He says the station
will go to court to try to get back on the air.

Critics say the move is part of a broader trend in Israel
to curb freedom of expression.

In recent days, Cabinet ministers and lawmakers have
pushed ahead proposed legislation that would block most
foreign government funding for dovish groups.
