Washington: US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron had wagered their nation`s "best" beer and lager ahead of Saturday`s World Cup match between their two nations.
Obama, who spoke to Cameron by phone from the Oval Office yesterday, suggested the wager, as per a summary of the conversation released by the White House.
"The President noted that the historical record of previous World Cup matches between the United States and England favours the United States and the president wagered the best lager against the best beer in America on an American win over England."
Later, the match between the US and England ended in 1-1 tie.
The White House did not specify what Obama considers to be America`s best beer. Obama drank a Bud Light at the White House last summer during the so-called "beer summit" which brought together a Harvard professor and police officer after an incident between them sparked controversy, CNN reported.
This is the second time the two leaders have spoken since Cameron came into office.
According to the White House, Obama and Cameron "agreed to disagree on the desired outcome of the US-England World Cup soccer match."
Meanwhile, US Vice President Joe Biden had a pep-talk with the American team before their match against England when he made a brief dressing-room visit.
Biden told the team that he brought best wishes from President Obama during a five-minute meeting with players, wishing them luck and saying how happy he was to be able to watch them play.
"The players and coaches were honoured to have Vice President Biden visit the team before the match," US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said.
The US team had visited the White House on May 27, meeting with Obama, Biden and former US president Bill Clinton before departing for South Africa.
