Singapore: Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of modern Singapore, was hospitalised late Wednesday for treatment of a chest infection, media reports said.
The 87-year-old was supposed to attend the wake for a senior minister who died on Monday, but was instead admitted to Singapore General Hospital, said a statement from Lee`s press secretary posted on the Channelnewsasia website.
Lee was Singapore`s first prime minister. Under his government, the city-state developed from a third-world port to one of Asia`s wealthiest countries in just three decades.
Since stepping down in 1990, Lee has retained great influence in Singapore as an advisor to the government.
Currently, he serves as a minister mentor in the cabinet of his son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
