Jakarta: At least 12 people were killed and 25 reported missing in flash floods in a remote region of Indonesia`s North Sumatra province today, officials said.
Floodwaters up to two metres (six and a half feet) in depth hit villages in Mandailang Natal district in the hilly and heavily forested province in the early hours, health
ministry crisis centre chief Rustam Pakaya told reporters.
"Twenty-five people are missing and twelve have died...(the flood) happened in a very remote and very difficult area for transportation and communication," Pakaya said.
"The rescue team is on the way. It`s hard to reach the area because the roads are muddy," he said.
"The rescue team may arrive in the area in the evening." Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia, which is densely populated and prone to frequent heavy rains.
