New Delhi: Delhi Assembly Speaker Yoganand Shastri on Thursday said the national capital was "completely unsafe" and cited the recent rape incident in Dhaula Kuan and the theft of his deputy's SUV from his home here.

Briefing reporters about the just-concluded Winter Session of the Delhi Assembly, Shastri said: "According to me, Delhi is not safe where we have the SUV of Deputy Speaker being stolen and incidents of rape like the one in Dhuala Kuan happening."

"In my point of view, it is completely unsafe," he said.

He also defended his decision to suspend BJP MLAs for three days from the Assembly as "they made it very difficult for the proceedings to go.

"The accusation by Opposition that I acted partially is baseless. The situation in the Assembly was unbearable. They made it very difficult. There was no other option," he said.

He was asked to respond to BJP's allegation that he sided with the ruling party on the issue.

Shastri said the session had six sittings in which 546 notices for raising questions were issued.

"Out of them 120 was starred, 360 unstarred and 46 were rejected. Out of the 120 questions, 22 were replied and 67 supplements raised to it," he said.

There were 29 notifications and 26 special mentions during the session.

I agree with Mr. Shastri on the fact that Delhi is unsafe. Last February I flew from the US to IGA. I was through with the immigration and custom around 12:30 am. I hired a taxi inside the airport(which was supposed to be safe) for going to new Delhi railway station. The taxi driver droped me and my wife along side of the road at the station. It was imposssible for us to take our luggage to the station by oursekves and immediately we were surrounded by four/five thugs who surrounded us and wanted to rob us. I could not hire any other taxi to get out of that place untill a Sardar Ji stopped there, picked us up and charged us probably ten times the fare (for about two KM ride to a very dirty hotel) who charged us a high sum for a very dirty room. Amazingly while I was stuck on the roadside along the railway station for about two hours, not a single cop/ police car passed by. I am about sixty five years old and have been to Delhi probably fifty time, but after this incident I will take a plane to my destination from Delhi instead of being subjected to such a dangerous situation.
