Cabinet allows Health Min to procure more condoms from HLL

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet today cleared a proposal of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of allowing it to procure condoms from public sector Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL) beyond the permissible 75 per cent limit.

The Health Ministry had sought Cabinet approval for procuring more condoms from the public sector unit instead of the buying from private players due to cartelisation and other reasons, the sources said.

As per the current formula, the Ministry is allowed to procure 75 per cent of the installed capacity of HLL or 75 per cent of average requirement, whichever is lower.

The Ministry procures condoms under social sector obligations for free supply at various health centres across the country for prevention of HIV/AIDS.

After procurement, the Ministry provides the same to the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO)/Department of AIDS Control.
