An amount of Rs 4.21 crore was distributed among the displaced persons of 1947 of Jammu province as land deficiency compensation today.

Jammu: An amount of Rs 4.21 crore was distributed among the displaced persons of 1947 of Jammu province as land deficiency compensation today.

Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla distributed the amount among the beneficiaries through 424 cheques at a function here.

Addressing the gathering, Bhalla said that Prime Minister Manmohan singh is making all out efforts to upgrade the socio-economic conditions of the displaced persons of 1947, 1965 and 1971.

For this purpose, the centre has approved Rs 49 crore package for distribution of land deficiency compensation among the displaced persons, he said.

The Minister said that it was the concerted effort of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that centre has enhanced the amount of compensation from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh per family.

He directed the concerned officers to conclude the names of left out families after proper verification so that compensation could be distributed among them.

Responding to the demands of the displaced persons, the Minister said that a comprehensive strategy will be chalked out for taking necessary steps for reserving quota in technical and professional universities.

He said that the government was committed to develop all the colonies of refugees at par with urban centre by providing road connectivity, healthcare, education, electricity, drinking water facilities etc.
