Five fast-track courts to take up sexual assault cases

Delhi government decided to set up five fast-track courts exclusively for taking up cases of sexual assaults on women.

New Delhi: Delhi government Tuesday decided to set up five fast-track courts exclusively for taking up cases of sexual assaults on women so as to ensure speedy justice to the victims.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Delhi Cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

"We have decided to set up the fast track courts to deal with the cases of sexual assault on women," Dikshit said.

She said the Cabinet has approved creation of 40 posts in different categories for the purpose.

The city government had last year requested the Delhi High Court to set up such courts to ensure speedy justice to victims of sexual assault.

In its response, the High Court told the government that the additional session judges are dealing with cases of sexual assault on women and if it wants that these cases be dealt with and tried by special courts/fast-track courts, then the government may proceed further.

In its letter, the government had requested the High Court to set up one fast-track court in each of the nine districts.
