IGCAR finalises design of commercial FBRs

Scientists from Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) have finalised the design features of the commercial Fast Breeder Reactors (FBR) which are to be constructed at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, a top scientist said.

Mumbai: Scientists from Indira Gandhi Centre
for Atomic Research (IGCAR) have finalised the design features
of the commercial Fast Breeder Reactors (FBR) which are to be
constructed at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu, a top scientist said.

"A conceptual design of twin unit (2x500 MW) of
commercial FBR to be constructed at Kalpakkam has been
finalised and thus a road map has been established to enhance
the safety features of future fast reactors with economical
aspects also in mind," IGCAR Director S C Chetal said.

The layout of component handling equipment in the fuel
and decontamination buildings has been arrived at and most of
the equipments in the fuel and decontamination buildings are
being shared between the twin units resulting in improved
economy, Chetal said.

Scientists have ensured that the equipment to handle
radioactive waste has also been integrated with fuel building
since a major portion of the active waste generated is
associated with component handling.

"Optimisation of permanent reactor assembly components
have been completed and the primary cost estimation indicates
a saving of approximately 25 per cent on specific weight,
which in turn has strong linkage with economics," Chetal said.

India`s first Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) which
is under advanced stage of construction is expected to begin
its operation by first quarter of next year, while country`s
first Fast Breeder Test Reactor has been operating for the
last two decades successfully, he said.
