Washington: A strong 6.3-magnitude
earthquake hit an area in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of
Argentina on Sunday, but there was no immediate word of casualties
or damage, the US goverment reported.
The epicenter of the tremor, which struck at 1200 GMT,
was located in the Drake Passage, 352 kilometers
south-southeast of Ushuaia, Argentina, according to the US
Geological Survey.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude
scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area
of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
