The quake measured a magnitude of 6.1, the survey reported. It hit at 2:33 am today local time (1833 GMT yesterday).
It struck at a depth of six miles and had its epicentre about 135 miles north-northeast of Baubau on Sulawesi and about 1,150 miles east of the capital, Jakarta.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck off West Sumatra in Indonesia on September 30 and killed hundreds of people and caused massive property damage.
